Kanwariyas jam highway near Siyalaj after 1 dies in accident – Surat Today live News
SURAT: A 25-year-old kanwariya returning with water from river Narmada was knocked down and another injured by a truck near Siyalaj village of Surat district on Saturday.
An angry group of kanwariyas belonging to the city sat on a protest blocking the highway. The kanwariyas wanted compensation and refused to accept the dead man’s body, but police officers were able to convince them and managed to clear the highway.
Ravi Sharma, a resident of Udhna in the city, died on the spot when he was knocked down by the truck. Sharma’s friend Surendra Tiwari, 24, also a resident of Udhna, who was with the deceased, sustained injuries in the accident. He was shifted to a hospital and discharged after treatment.
A group of kanwariyas was walking on the side of the road when the truck rammed into them near Siyalaj creek little ahead of Kosamba bridge. Police booked the absconding driver of the truck for causing Sharma’s death on a complaint of Tiwari.
The deceased and his friends were returning from Bharuch after collecting fresh water from river Narmada. They had left from Bharuch on Friday and reached near Siyalaj on Saturday noon when the accident took place. The group was coming to Daksheshwar Mahadev temple in Udhna area.
“They initially refused to accept the deceased’s body and created traffic jam on the highway. But later police reached the spot and managed to clear the road. The situation is normal there now,” deputy superintendent of police, Surat, S K Vala said.
A large number of youths from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, who are living in the city, walk up to Shiva temple during the holy month of Shravana with fresh river water. It is a traditional practice among the youths here belonging to the states of north India.
